To enjoy university, not endure it.

Hi I’m Georgia Spencer (She/Her), I’m currently the Disabled Students Officer, and I’m also the DIVA society treasurer.
I’m running for welfare officer not only as a response to my own experience at UAL, but through working with DIVA and as disabled students officer, I have come to understand just how many people aren’t having their basic university needs met. I want to offer a voice for students that feel that they are lost within UAL, and I want to stand up for what students require to enjoy university, not endure it.

My goals as welfare officer are:

  • Better targeted & accessible mental health support. I want to work with students by conducting a survey in order to find the gaps in UALs support system. Students have been let down in this past year, some maybe needing support for the first time, and others needing more support than before. I want to know what areas need improving or introducing, and lobby for that change.
  • Meet accessibility needs for students online and on campus. DIVA society is currently working on surveys to evaluate the ways in which students access requirements for online learning aren’t being met. I want to support and amplify DIVA’s initiative by campaigning and lobbying for the extra support that students need within UAL, be it better inclusion training of staff, or software requirements, and implement these changes as soon as possible.
  • Better representation for underrepresented student groups such as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and Disabled students. UAL continue to hire voices that are extremely damaging to portions of our student body. UAL societies have a range of voices that can be uplifted and utilized, I want to work with these groups to best understand how we can work together to work on diversifying the curriculum.
