In the intricate world of art and design education, where creativity intertwines with challenges, I often found myself treading an uncharted path as a COVID student, with many uncertainties, a lot of isolation and a deep need for connection. It was during these turbulent times that the idea of ‘Designers Dispatch’ began to take shape - a project born out of a desire to create a communal space for shared experiences.
I guess, as an architecture student and designer, I started to feel the pulse of the creative industry, especially with all the complexities that came with the pandemic. So, Designers Dispatch emerged as a response to the isolation and competitive nature inherent in our field. It's a place where students can candidly share thoughts, experiences and the highs and lows of their creative journey.
Being a COVID student really magnified the need for advice and shared insights. As well as these things, the need for connection became a bit more pronounced. I, like many others, felt the weight of uncertainty and sometimes went through the challenges alone. So really, I want Designers Dispatch to become a virtual community where creatives could find solace in shared struggles and triumphs.
The creative industry, often glamorised from the outside, conceals the challenges creatives face - pressures, self-comparison, and the demanding nature of the work. I liked the idea that the postcards are these tangible expressions of the varying moments faced as a creative. Each illustrated postcard is like a snapshot of the rollercoaster creatives’ experience. The postcards serve not only as a creative outlet but as a collective voice, a testament to the resilience within the creative community. The emphasis shifts from showcasing individual talent to fostering connection and understanding. It's a reminder that even in times of isolation, our shared stories can bridge gaps and cultivate a sense of belonging in the creative world. The writings that accompanied the illustrations on the postcards were collected thoughts from various students. I had some lovely conversations with those who contributed, and I found myself really drawn to the idea that this collection of thoughts could grow over time. Although 'Designers Dispatch' is still a work in progress, I’m genuinely excited about the potential it holds and what it could eventually become.
I had the incredible opportunity to learn from my peers, both during and in retrospect. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t been so hard on myself and had sought help when I needed it - there are so many resources available. It’s important to embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow and trust your instincts. You’re in a space where you can explore and discover what excites you. I tried so many different things while studying - illustration being one of them, haha! Amid the pursuit for impressive works of art and design, remember to enjoy the journey and the creative process, because that’s where true growth happens. Welcome, good luck and you will be amazing!
As a final note, I want to thank my lovely peers and everyone who shared their thoughts and insights with me. This project grew out of a wonderful Central Saint Martins-based storytelling collective I joined during my time at university, which gave me the opportunity to explore this topic and let it evolve into something I truly care about and hope to grow. Your input was instrumental in developing this idea, I hope it will also provide value to others who engage with it.
Designers Dispatch would love for you to join in. Please feel free to reach out, share your thoughts, and let us know about your creative processes - We’d love for you to be a part of Designers Dispatch!
We’re excited to collect more postcards and in partnership with Arts SU hope to create a digital or physical installation – or even both – to showcase your postcards.
