Arts SU has responded to the National Union of Students (NUS)'s call for evidence on the impact of guarantors on student renting.
Arts Students' Union has submitted a response to the National Union of Students (NUS)'s call for evidence on the impact of guarantors on student renting.
Fuelled by your experiences of the student housing market and our own research into the vast impact the ongoing housing crisis is having on our members, our response details the experiences of our students who are asked to provide a guarantor: 56% of respondents to our 2023 research were asked to provide a guarantor, and 24% of those were unable to do so, needing to pay large sums of money upfront just to be able to find somewhere to live.
We also detail support available to students asked to provide a guarantor: after lobbying from Arts SU and its Sabbatical Officers, UAL has partnered with Housing Hand to provide a guarantor scheme to students unable to source one themselves. We're hopeful that our submission will use the voices of our students to enact positive change and ensure equitable housing opportunities for all of our students.
