Arts Students' Union (Arts SU) has responded to the Parliamentary call for Evidence for the Renters' Rights Public Bill Committee.

Using your anonymous responses to our research into private rental, the cost of living, and housing and community, we've built a full response outlining Arts SU's stance on the provision of the proposed Renters' Rights Bill, including recommendations for more protections to avoid discrimination against students.

Our research has found that UAL students endure horrific conditions, often while battling skyrocketing living costs: over 40% of our students told us that they spend "almost all" of their income to meet their housing costs, with 44% of respondents saying they live with mould, 32% with damp, and 22% with infestations (for example, mice).

We believe that the changes proposed in the Renters' Rights Bill will make positive changes for students. But it doesn't go far enough, and in some cases, discriminates against students.
