Redefining Resources

Opportunities and Barriers in Circular Design

By Jasmine Schofield, MA Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures.

PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday 12th December, 5pm - 7pm (everyone welcome)

Exhibitions Dates: 5th Dec 2024 - 24th Jan 2025

WHERE: Arts SU Project Space, Camberwell College of Arts, Peckham Rd, SE5 8UF

Redefining Resources is an intersection of a research project by Jasmine Schofield, who is completing an MA in Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures. This exhibition explores the opportunities and barriers faced when attempting to be environmentally considerate about materials as a designer in today's age.

The work in progress show will feature information, documentation and creative processes from a series of design research projects with Jasmine and collaborators from different social sectors. Each project was conducted with material considerations through auto-ethnographic research methods questioning how circular design interacts with local community knowledge, independent artists and businesses.

Redefining Resources questions our valuation of materials and waste in a world marked by excessive consumption, advancing climate change and continued development. By showcasing new ways to think about materials and waste, this exhibition challenges visitors to reconsider their relationship to materials and hopes to inspire a new generation of designers to embrace circular thinking in their practice.

By following a set of sustainable design principles developed through the concept of the Circular Economy, this exhibition's impact has been carefully considered. The central abstract visual display demonstrates the potential of waste materials in creating aesthetic designs.

State of Being

Landscapes through the eyes of international artists

PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday 31st October, 5pm - 7pm
EXHIBITION: 1st - 27th November 2024
WHERE: SU Project Space, Camberwell College of Arts, Peckham Rd SE5 8UF

State of Being brings together 6 international artists nearing the completion of their master's studies in painting. This exhibition delves deep into our shared experiences as international students and our diverse interpretation of landscape art.

As the clock ticks towards the end of our studies, we find ourselves trying to hold onto fleeting moments – in class, with school’s resources, and most importantly, with people. This brings a bittersweet realisation: those we see regularly may soon drift away, much like high school friendships fading with time.

This exhibition is born from a desire to strengthen the bonds within our current community, before we inevitably part ways. State of Being reflects our current state of confusion as we approach the end of our London chapter, serving as an attempt to bring people together one last time.

The concept was inspired by a group critique of the summer show, where works were grouped by common themes. It deepened our understanding of each other's work. For instance, we discovered that Zi Qi's paintings include elements from her previous works, creating a dialogue between her pieces. Yu Xuan's tranquil, layered works evoke a sense of meditative calm through his deliberate process. With this exhibition, we aim to have our visitors experience the 'ah-ha' moments we shared during that critique.

Through this exhibition, we hope to create connections that linger long after our academic journey ends, allowing us to drift apart more slowly, with the bonds we've forged enduring beyond our time together.

Featuring Jiaxuan Liang, Shuwen Wang, Xinyi Qin, Xuan Hew, Yuxuan Hou, Ziqi Chen.
